Interview with Natalie from The Association for Australian Heavy Metal
Tell us what The Association for Australian Heavy Metal actually do:
The Association for Australian Heavy Metal (AAHM) was established to support Australian Metal and promote it here and abroad. Our ultimate goal is to be able to link the bands up with promoters, touring companies, managers, and of course labels but more practically with services such as rehearsal or recording studios and venues that support metal.
Our first project, the Australian Metal Awards (AMA), will be a way for bands to get the recognition and promotion that they deserve.
Who came up with the idea?
It was a collective idea. We’ve heard many people complain over the years about the state of the metal scene / community and one day we just decided to do something about it ourselves. So we all sat down and wrote down some ideas, and the Australian Metal Awards is what we came up with.
What is involved in the Australian Metal Awards?
To be eligible for any of the awards you will need to show that your band has been active during the period of March 2008 and March 2009.
Some awards, such as the Best Youth band, will need to show that at least ¾ of the band are under 18 years of age, or the Best Regional Band will need to show that they currently reside in a regional area.
Registration forms will be placed on the website shortly which will need to be filled in and sent in with a basic Demo, EP or full album as well as a basic press kit.
As for the actual event, we will be holding this for the fans as well as the bands and the music industry reps that actually care about metal in Australia. All will be welcome!!
Where are you based and who are you aiming at specifically?
We are Sydney based, although we have contacts throughout Australia. We are aiming at anyone who is in a band. Regardless of if you are signed / unsigned, you will still have a chance of becoming a finalist if you have been active during the period of March 2008 and March 2009.
Who have you got supporting you thus far?
We have had a lot of support from many people in the music industry so far. For example, some of our judges for the awards are:

What are you hoping to achieve?
We want bands to feel like there’s some hope within the future of Australian metal. And we also want the fans to start paying attention to the quality of metal that is coming out of our own country.
How can people get involved?
People can get involved by spreading the word! Bands can start registering on our website and we will send them updates / reminders etc.
