Interview with Mattie from
History of The Book Of Heavy Metal Productions::
It all started when a friend's band, Browzer, needed some graphics help on xanga.com way back when. I helped them out there and figured ‘why not start doing that on a larger level?!” So after a few layout sites failed, I opened up my own graphics page called The Book of Heavy Metal. I haven't been open for long (a year in January 2009) but I've helped out hundreds of bands.
What you do:
I will do any request asked of me (if it's possible). Graphic design, organizing cluttered Myspace sites, photography, layouts, logos, banners, t-shirt designs, sticker designs, promotion, concert fliers etc all for free! Plus I'm a pretty cool person to get to know!
Who you've done this for so far:
Browzer, Prayer of the Dying, Wrath Passion, New World Sinner, Gravegouger, Distorted Genocide, Anal Blast, Blood Eagle, Black Winds Of Satans Northern Moonfrost, Deliver Us To Evil, Human Pollution, Vindicator, Monday With A Bullet, Dark Iron Legacy, Retribution, Fury of the Blender, Obsidian Reign, This Self Punishment, Cellador, Crimson Thirst, Dead-Light Anatomy, Korillian, Death May Die, Dreaming Of A Nightmare, Minderaser, Satanic War Machine, Seventh Day, Ictus, Eyes Of The Dead, The Clarksons, Face Of Fatality, Warnament, Coventide, Sever The Ties, Graveyard Feast, Vanlade, Not Waving But Drowning and so on. I've made banners, layouts, and various designs for them.
I've done a lot of promotion for Atonement, Prayer of the Dying, New World Sinner, Browzer, Ragenheart, Foretold Defiance and Threatenol. There are so many more!
Why did you choose to follow this career path?
I do want to make it a career some day. Right now it’s just a hobby that I really enjoy. I just really wanted to help out metal anyway I can. After all it’s done for me I figure I owe it something it return.
How can The Book Of Heavy Metal help bands?
By helping them acquire more fans! Getting the word out of them plus giving the band more of a professional look with logos and layouts and whatnot. And come on, it’s free! It’s like the most important word in a musician’s vocabulary!
What does it cost on average?
Nothing! But I will admit bands have sent me plenty of merchandise; CD's, a couple t-shirts, stickers etc but in no way is it expected or required! However, it does make me quite happy to receive such gifts!
Why should people choose you over anyone else?
Honestly, anyone helping out the metal scene in any way is awesome in my eyes! I think my services are well produced and for free, so I mean, from experience I know that being a musician is an expensive job. It’s always good to have something like my site to help you out.
Further Promotion:
I make concert fliers for local shows and distribute them. If I receive merchandise, like stickers, I put them in random places and on my car. I wear every t-shirt sent to me. I have a featured band that gets most of their songs in my player on my Myspace plus multiple bulletins linking to the bands page. If I absolutely love you, I put your banner on my page, put you in my top friends and send bulletins out to my friends both on my Book Of Heavy Metal page and personal page until people get sick of it!
