Review:
In true Nordic spirit Ironwood have created a magical atmosphere of Viking mythology and Scandinavian sentiment which graces the ears with much pleasure. The CD itself has runic symbols printed upon it, the bands logo is infused with an ancient Scandinavian style print and live they prove their worth. My only real concern with the EP is the lack of musician info (that is who plays what). Though within there is only blissful, harmonic, metallic, serenity.
Veer – From the wolf howls to the rain storms, raw and inspiring, majestic and imaginative sums up this track. As good as they are live, I think creating the CD allows them to produce the ideas they obviously hold and then have the opportunity to show us exactly what they are trying to achieve. In all honesty, it sounds a bit rough and there are places this could be improved, but overall the concept is fantastic. It consists of clean deep vocals with a touch of black metal vocals toward the end as the music transcends from its rhythmic essence to a dark metallic onslaught.
“Odin, Allfather, High One, Welcome One, Wakeful One Eyed Wayfarer, The Masked One, Fiery Eyed Concealer, God of Goths, God of Gods, Victory Father, Glad in Battle, Spear Thruster, Truth Finder, Way Weary Bearer of the Magic Wand, Luller of Sleep and Dreams…”
The Tree – A peaceful and poetic track. They are Australia’s version of Bathory - Nordland style. As a massive fan of Scandinavian music I can only be besotted by such music. Rhythmic guitars, clean vocals and beautiful harmonies with a hint of extra atmospheric trinkets compile this one. It is truly captivating. I think this track could appeal to folks from all sorts of genres. It is artistic and poetic and truly enlightening. It is beautiful in the true sense of the word.
“I dream of rune shapes, In mystic landscapes, I fly I follow, The flap of wings, Seeking shelter of green growth, Hearing the rumble of great roots, Growling branches breaking, New life sprouting…”
Song of the Danes – Another raw sounding track with that Bathory feel. It is a shame this CD has only three tracks as I would love to hear an entire album. It incorporates an interlude with an atmosphere of seagulls and an eerily strummed guitar with those raw, deep vocals which make way for an explosive metallic arrangement of chaos and scorn.
“ From Hel’s hall north and east it howls, To swipe at shrouds with blade-sharp claws, Wailing ice-breath whine of wind-whipped snow, Rending at sail with rime-ridden shriek…”
In essence, I think you need to see them live and support this band with as much as you can as they are one if our most original concepts and given the resources could prove to be one of Australia’s most productive bands.
