MORTAL SIN
LYCANTHIA
KILLRAZER
INSLAIN
Empire Hotel, Annandale
29 February 2008
Inslain created a challenge for the audience; reeling them in with such enthusiasm. They played 12 songs including; Taunted Thoughts, Earth Genocide, Judge in Vein, Limits of Reality and Reaper of the Night. As I watched them play I thought they don’t belong here, they belong in Germany playing to the metal masses and getting the audience they deserve. They seemed so restricted here like they have so much more to give that Australia just doesn’t offer its bands. Don’t get me wrong, we love our metal, but we just don’t show it as the Euro’s do. I’ve never understood why we don’t support the first band of the night. Not just pub gigs but international concerts too! It’s hard enough to get a metal gig happening in this place without our ridiculous support methods. Alas, in essence, they played hard and they played well.
Killrazer were absolutely the best band of the night for me! I can not praise these guys enough! They have the best guitar riffs and licks I’ve heard in a long time! They’re loud and fast and heavy and true to the metal! It is a MUST that you go check them out! The singer, Doug creates an imposing stature on stage, almost inflicting fear within you to watch and listen and get involved! They played Salt In The Wounds, Sunken, Unleash Hell, Allegiance (first time live), Suicide Command and The Burial Begins. I do believe it was Jimmy the guitarists first night and he played damn well cos they were and are metal at its best.
Lycanthia managed to draw the crowds and that alone should tell you how impressive and popular they have become. With Samantha’s violin and Sabine’s haunting vocals they carry their music to a level admired by many. Their music is dark yet eloquent, heavy and sombre. They are playing next at The Lansdowne on 8th March for free so if you haven’t seen them yet I suggest you attend this performance.
Mortal Sin headlined the evening at the Empire and put on one hell of a show. The audience was a mixture of old and new faces and just proved how timeless Mortal Sin truly are. Being their last show in Australia before they headed over to Europe, they really put their all into their performance. In fact, toward the end they had the guys from other bands come up on stage and join in and that really was fantastic to see. The whole set was filled with classic tracks and the vibe of the Empire was just awesome. Everyone got into it and just made it a great night.
I urge my readers to support Australian metal; buy their merchandise, attend the gigs and keep our venues alive. This was apparently the last metal gig at the Empire Hotel.
