How would you describe your music?
Our music is like a punch in the face. When we play a song we don’t really like to fade in or fade out, we just simply bring out the most brutal riff we can and expose it to the listener.
We bring elements of old school thrash to the table and add our twisted thoughts to the mix, which bring out a sound that we believe is unique. Not too many people can match us to other bands. That rocks!!
What one thing do you feel sets you apart from the rest in this genre?
We believe that a lot of bands have the same ideas, but what makes us different is the fact that we just do our own thing and don’t let anyone influence us in the way we write and we don’t jump on the band wagon no pun intended.
How long did it take to record your latest material?
When we recorded, we did it in sections. So we would do the drums on a certain day and then backing guitars another, bass on another, etc. We probably took about 2 weeks to record 3 songs.
What is the inspiration behind your latest material?
What inspires Recoil most when writing, is thinking about all the cool shit we’ve done and what’s to come. We are proud of what we have achieved over the past 6 years and are excited for what is to come.
Any plans for a music video?
Yes. We are in the planning stages of the video clip. This will be the biggest thing we have done to date. We hope it takes us to the next level and opens the doors for even bigger opportunities.
When you go into recording mode, do you find it easy or challenging?
When we go in to record, we practice for months and basically know the songs back to front. Of course it’s challenging but that’s what betters us as musicians. We are always prepared for the studio, and we find that we nut it out fast but as professional as possible. Because we record in sections, different days, we find it less rushed and it allows us to pick apart the music and analyse what we do and how to make it sound better.
Is there a particular market or country you are trying to reach?
Europe! We believe that Europe holds the key to any metal bands success. Look at all the major metal bands in the world (well the good ones). Most of them have come from Europe or Scandinavia, ie. Soilwork, In flames, Opeth, Children of Bodom, the list goes on.
Now you see most of these bands being signed to major labels. This is why we believe Europe is a great foundation for a metal band to kick-start a career and the punters seem genuinely interested in the music and the fans are very loyal.
What kind of message are you trying to relay to your audience?
Staying true to metal. Don’t get caught up with the new trends that are plaguing the scene these days.
What have you got in store for 2008?
Basically, get our film clip out there and our new album to be released. Also, we plan on touring the east coast of Australia with some really kick ass bands. Drinking plenty of beer and writing songs that make sense to what we do.
Who’s responsible for the bands artwork?
Most of the artwork comes from Ev and Ads, but recently we have been using a graphic designer named Owen who has produced some really cool designs, which we will be using for shirts, posters, myspace, etc. I think that what inspires us when it comes to the designs we choose is that they all are distinctive and make an impression. Our first E.P. cover was of Nails drenched with blood. Now that’s not to say we enjoy blood and nails and nails being soaked in blood, but we like the idea that people may take a second look and that the image may last a while for them to spread the word.
How hard has it been to get to this point?
It has been difficult at points. We have had to deal with plenty of people who didn’t want to pay us, people not confirming dates of gigs, things like that can make it really hard. We have all had our times when we’ve thought ‘what’s the point’ and all that, but we’ve just kept on going and here we are, doing things we thought were not even possible.
What is your favourite venue?
Our favourite venue would have to be the Gaelic Club. The sound is awesome and they know how to put on a real metal show. Whenever we play there, the crowd has been great and really into it. Maybe coz it’s an international stage, but the feel there is much more refreshing than playing at the local pub in town, where most of the time the patrons end up on the pokies for the night.
What are some of your favourite local acts? And have you had the chance to play alongside them?
We have played with some really cool bands, such as Town Hall Steps, The Vaine, Withdisdain, Tourettes, Final Treason, Carpathian, The Getaway Plan and lots more. They have all been real good to watch and man can they all play. We tend to play with very diverse bands, it seems to keep the crowd more interested.
What would be your most memorable gig / performance to date?
The most memorable would have to be, at the Gaelic Club. We played with Town Hall Steps and coz it is an international stage, we got a kick out of playing on it. The sound there was also amazing! Also we played at Club Blink recently it was great. It felt up close and personal and played with some cool bands too.
Have you got a favourite song you like to play? And is there one in particular you've noticed your fans have started asking for?
We have a few songs that people really get into and request on our myspace. Dead Cold, Suicide Trip and one of our oldest songs Murdered are the main three. I think it’s because they have such an impacting sound and feel to them and also coz they aren’t your typical run of the mill type songs. Our favourite song would have to be Suicide trip.
If you were playing at a metal festival, who would you prefer was playing alongside you and where would that be?
Well the ultimate would be playing with Pantera but for obvious reasons that’s just not possible. We have always loved the thought of playing along side our good mates that we grew up with, that would be one huge afterparty. Of course the Wacken Festival in Germany is definitely up there with the most desired festivals.
What kind of instruments do you use? And have you done the ‘Rock Star’ thing yet and smashed any equipment?
Drums, Guitar, Bass you know the usual. Wade has smashed mic’s and headphones before but I think that was more out of anger. Also Wade once fell into the drumkit. Too much drinky drinky I think.
Have you had many chances for signings?
Nah not much signings. Just the odd CD or drumstick. No weird stories as yet but we’ll keep you posted.
Where can people purchase your music and merchandise from?
When our Album comes it will be in most major CD stores. But for now our merch desk at our show is the way to go.
Fame, fun or finance?
All three would be nice but the fun is the main one. But we wont lie fame and fortune is a big motivation.
What words of advice can you offer anyone looking to enter the music industry?
Be prepared to put in a lot of money. At the start, more goes out than comes in. Try to organise everything yourself, coz there are too many people who are happy to rip you off at any cost. As bad as it sounds, it’s a selfish industry and you have to think of yourself first.
Anything you'd like to add or say to your fans?
Thanks for all the support and the dedication. It’s a hard business but it makes it worth all the effort when you guys come along ready to tear up the joint.
Keep a close eye on our Myspace for news, and show dates.
