Review:
Saattue (meaning ’procession’ in Finnish) released their self financed EP Kivisydän in 2004 and its follow up release Ikiuneen in 2006. In 2007 the band was signed by Spinefarm Records. Their debut album Jäähyvästi was released in January 2008. Saattue’s lyrics are all in Finnish and incorporate dark, raw and emotional musical elements. Their roots are deeply in doom metal along with other extreme metal genres.
Ikiuneen – Blasting into this track, we are welcomed with captivating death metal style vocals within a dark, doom metal essence. The music and overall sound is captivating. Not knowing what these Finnish folk are actually saying just makes it that much more intriguing and appealing. They create a wonderful dark atmosphere which mystifies and soothes.
Vieraaseen Multaan – The production of this CD is so smooth I barely noticed the change into this next track. Introduced with eery female vocals, we are soon embellished amidst some heavy doom laced guitar work. It is truly captivating and if you love doom metal then this is a definite must for the collection! It is true to the classic doom edge, with its slow melancholic chambers, though it possesses a unique Finnish quality that differentiates it from the usual get up.
Luutarhuri – Doom metal in general is quite lengthy and this is the shortest one on the album at 05:14. The structure within each track is interesting, though it does seem to have a continuous sound which is ok, but doesn’t vary as much as I’d like. So that effectively makes it rather monotonous, though we’ll see as we progress through the tracks. This by no means degrades the album, as I think it’s great and I love my doom so I am infatuated!
Hyiseen Veteen – A gentle introduction carries us into that deep, dark, doom element. The music is entrancing and you can lose yourself within it very easily. I am easily swayed by its mood. Both male and female vocals embrace amidst this track. Lyrically it seems quite enchanting.
Jäähyrvästi – A seductive embrace of doom and death drenches you with despair. Angst filled, clean vocals corrode as the emotions wither. I visualize mountains of snow and a sense of solitude far beyond any pleasantries; an emptiness unable to be filled. It is musically divine and over powering and shall surely defeat you.
Kaaosmaa – This track has a more mascular feel and edge to it. There is a nice growl accent to the clean vocals that seem so Finnishly wonderful! Finns in general seem to have a smooth sounding growl in their vocals, I love it!
Varjojen Saattue – The last and longest track on the album at 11:17. Greeted by another gentle introduction which carries you through a dark, emotional arrangement. Combining both male and female vocals creates a harmonious effect. You can really hear the angst within this one. It seems to relay a very powerful message somehow. It’s magical.
Being a promotional CD I’m unaware of the actual sale item and its contents. So I am unsure if there are lyrics printed on its sleeve. If there are then you have the ability to look up the lyrics on a translator. Something I wish I could do right now! The CD cover is perhaps a good reflection of its musical content. Should you be a doom metal fan, then as I stated, this is for you! For those that would like something different in their collection, then try this! It’s not exactly sing along stuff unless you know Finnish, but it makes great background music or meditative music. It’s the type of music you can stop and think and imagine with. It is truly entrancing!
